Pau Jorquera Bordonau, conductor
Mercè Sanchis i Bros, organ

The Escolania de Montserrat comes to Ibiza with a musical programme intended to serve as a bridge between past and present. Heir to a musical and spiritual tradition spanning more than 700 years, the Escolania keeps Montserrat’s legacy alive while opening its doors to contemporary creation. This concert brings the richness of sacred music rooted in the Montserrat tradition into dialogue with works by contemporary composers, showing how the voices of the choirboys, the faith of a community, the Virgin of Montserrat and the beauty surrounding her continue to inspire new forms of musical praise.

The Escolania de Montserrat
The Escolania de Montserrat is one of the oldest musical institutions in Europe. Documented since the 13th century, it is associated with the Benedictine monastery and Marian shrine of Montserrat, where the choirboys take part in the liturgical life of the sanctuary through singing and music. Over the centuries, it has contributed to the development of the Montserrat Musical School, which has produced distinguished composers and performers.
Under the direction of Father Ireneu Segarra (1953–1997), the Escolania gained international recognition through recordings, tours and festival appearances. Today, under the direction of Pau Jorquera, it comprises around forty boys aged between nine and fourteen from Catalonia. Its primary mission is to accompany the sanctuary’s daily prayers and promote sacred music, both from Montserrat’s musical heritage and by composers from around the world. Through their singing, the choirboys convey peace and beauty, connecting with audiences from diverse cultures.

Twenty years of the organ
Over these two decades, this magnificent instrument, with nearly one thousand pipes, has become a prominent feature of Ibiza’s musical heritage and a meeting point for music, culture and community life.
Built by the Mallorcan master organ builder Pere Reynés i Florit, this mechanically operated instrument has twenty stops. Its sound, inspired by the tradition of the Baroque organ and featuring a stop that evokes the Ibizan flaüta, makes it a unique part of the musical heritage of the Pityusic Islands.
Since its inauguration, the organ has sustained an ongoing programme of concerts, particularly through the Autumn Concert Series, which has brought renowned performers and a repertoire spanning different periods and styles to local audiences. It has also hosted distinguished choral ensembles, helping to establish Sant Josep as a leading venue for organ music in Ibiza.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all the individuals, organisations and institutions that made its construction possible, as well as to everyone who has contributed to making this programme a reality.
